The Tuscan organic winery Villa Petriolo in Cerreto Guidi has become the first winery in Europe to receive certification for sustainable tourism. This is the ISO 21401 standard for the sustainability management system for accommodation, which was accepted by the Italian organisation Valoritalia. Already in 2021, Villa Petriolo was named "Best Sustainable Place 2021" by Save the Planet.

Wine, grappa, olive oil, honey, chickpeas, lentils, pasta and natural cosmetics are produced on the listed organic farm. Guests can enjoy Tuscan cuisine according to the farm-to-table concept in three restaurants: the Bistro Bottega del Petriolo, the Osteria di Golpaja and the gourmet restaurant PS Ristorante. The 35 suites are heated exclusively by photovoltaics, which are also used to generate hot water and heat the outdoor pool.

"Everything at Villa Petriolo is designed to tie in with the historical roots of the area and its inhabitants, and to make use of everything nature has to offer," explains Daniele Nannetti, managing director and founder of the property, which was acquired in 2018 together with the Cuadra family. "So far, we have managed to exploit one hundred per cent of the agricultural potential of the 166 hectares and create a luxury based on the centuries-old agricultural tradition of the region. For us, sustainability means protecting the environment and the social fabric. To do this, we apply a circular economy that avoids waste in every way."
