The trade representatives of the new US administration are not abolishing the high tariffs on wine and spirits from Europe for the time being. The United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced a few days ago that there was currently no reason to reverse the tariffs. The tariffs were tightened again on 12 January 2021. Accordingly, the USA now also levies a duty of 25 percent on wines with an alcohol content of 14 percent or more from Germany and France, as well as on cognac, brandies and brandy.

Since 2019, wines from many European states with less than 14 percent alcohol as well as whiskey from Northern Ireland and Scotland have been subject to an import duty of 25 percent in the USA. The reason for this is the dispute that has been simmering for years over subsidies for aircraft construction in Europe and the USA at Boeing and Airbus.
