The Chamber of Agriculture of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia assumes that more and more wine-growing businesses will settle there. This is reported by the news agency dpa. "Climate change is opening up new perspectives for professional viticulture," said Bernhard Rüb, spokesman for the Chamber of Agriculture, when asked by dpa. With more sun and rising average temperatures, new locations are coming into focus.
In addition, there is a consumer trend towards regional products that can be sold directly from the farm. According to the Chamber of Agriculture, professional viticulture has already become the second pillar of income for individual farmers or fruit growers. "For the first time in 2020, the planting rights for additional cultivation areas in NRW have almost been exhausted," Rüb told dpa. This involves just under five ha of vineyards, fwhich the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food had granted planting rights for NRW. According to the regulation introduced in 2016, up to five hectares of additional area per year are possible in North Rhine-Westphalia.
