The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has presented its annual report for 2022. While wine-growing areas and production volumes have changed only slightly, global wine consumption fell again by one percent to 232 million hl. Director General Pau Roca identifies price increases and the increasingly difficult economic environment as the main causes, but also the decline in China, where consumption has been falling by two per cent per year since 2018. France remains the largest consumer in the EU (25.3 million hl) and the second largest in the world, behind the USA, where 34 million hl of wine were consumed.

The volume of trade was 107 million hl, five per cent less than in the record year 2021, but the value of exports is a record 37.6 billion euros, nine per cent higher than in 2021, as a result of a sharp increase in average export prices in all the main wine exporting countries. In terms of value, France confirms its position as the leading nation with wine exports worth 12.3 billion euros, accounting for almost a third of the world's export value.

In 2022, the USA, Germany and the UK continued to lead in wine imports. At 41 million hl, they together accounted for 38 per cent of the global total and 39 per cent of the value at €13.1 billion. Germany, with a decline of 9.3 per cent in volume and 4 per cent in value, was overtaken by the USA (+ 3 per cent in volume to 14.4 million hl, +17 per cent in value to 7 billion euros) as the largest wine importer in 2022. German wine imports amounted to 13.4 million hl worth 2.7 billion euros. According to the OIV, the biggest decline was caused by imports of bottled wines, which fell both in volume (-8 per cent) and value (-9 per cent) compared to 2021.

In his statements, Pau Roca emphasised the importance of sparkling wines for international trade. They were the only category that had increased in both value and volume in 2022. Although they only account for 11 per cent of the total wine trade volume, they generate 23 per cent of the value of registered exports. The main beneficiaries of this development are France, Italy and Spain, the three leading countries in this category.
