Amcor

The first screw caps for wine bottles were introduced 60 years ago. In 1964, the company Amcor Capsules introduced its Stelvin closures, which were specially developed for Swiss winegrowers. As the Chasselas grape variety, which is widespread in Switzerland, was particularly susceptible to cork defects, Amcor, which has its headquarters in Zurich, turned its attention to the problem. The biggest challenge for the developers was to preserve the wine with its flavours, freshness and quality in the best possible way.

The aluminium screw cap for wine bottles was considered revolutionary at the time and remained the exception in the wine industry until the early 2000s. It only became established in 2001, when it was used on a large scale by New Zealand producers. In New Zealand and Australia, nine out of ten wines are currently screw-fermented. The technology is now used by wineries in 40 wine-producing countries.
