The Rioja Control Council, the Consejo Regulador DOCa, has presented a five-year strategic plan to establish the region as a "leader in sustainability". To this end, the use of pesticides is to be reduced by 50 percent and the CO2 footprint by ten percent. At the same time, the number of wine tourists is to be almost quadrupled to 1.3 million visitors and sales are to be increased by 35 percent to 312 million litres by 2025. Exports are to account for a share of 44 percent. With this strategy, Rioja wants to position itself "as a global market leader in wine production".

It is intended to "illustrate the pioneering character of Rioja and aims to increase the value of the region and raise awareness of our wines, especially in important export markets", said President Fernando Salamero in a press release.
