For the first time, the Norwegian state alcohol monopoly Vinmonopolet invites tenders for an import quota for Austrian wines made from Piwi varieties. In this strictly regulated market, wines may only be imported with approval and upon request. Until the end of March, Austrian wineries can submit their fungus-resistant (Piwi) wines from the grape varieties Cabernet Blanc, Donauriesling and Donauveltliner of the 2021 vintage. The selected wines will be available in the state shops from September.

Piwis are new varieties that combine strong resistance to fungal diseases such as powdery and downy mildew (Oidium and Peronospora) with the sensory characteristics of classic grape varieties. As they require significantly fewer treatments, they are seen as an important contribution to achieving the EU's Green Deal, which stipulates a 50 per cent saving in plant protection products.

The available quantities of the grape varieties requested by Vinmonopolet in Austria are currently still small. There are 21 hectares of Cabernet Blanc, 54 hectares of Donauriesling and 31 hectares of Donauveltliner. However, the importance of Piwi grape varieties is steadily increasing.
