Wines from Abruzzo will in future be marketed under a new quality pyramid. The four DOC appellations Colline Teramane, Colline Pescaresi, Terre de L'Aquila and Terre di Chieti will bear the addition "d'Abruzzo". This is intended to emphasise the "Abruzzo" brand on the one hand, and on the other hand to make it clear at a glance which of the four provinces the wine comes from. For all four, the highest quality level "Superiore" is introduced. The eight IGT Colli Aprutini, Colli del Sangro, Colline Frentane, Colline Pescaresi, Colline Teatine, Del Vastese o Histonium, Terre Aquilane and Terre di Chieti will be abolished and will now be marketed under a single overarching designation of origin: Terre d'Abruzzo IGT. Here, too, the ulterior motive is to put the Abruzzo region in the foreground. The Consorzio Tutela Vini d'Abruzzo had already launched the new production rules in 2019. Now they have also been adopted by the national wine committee of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture.

"The common identity-creating name "d'Abruzzo" for all wines as well as the introduction of the category "Superiore" for the top wines will facilitate communication, especially abroad. With a single IGT, we create a strong regional image", Valentino Di Campli, president of the Consorzio Tutela Vini d'Abruzzo, comments the innovations. They will apply from the coming 2022 vintage.

The wines from Abruzzo were able to enjoy an export growth of 8.1 percent in 2021. Altogether, wines worth 203 million euro were sold abroad.
