Bodegas Vizar Dehesa Peñalba is the twentieth winery in Spain to receive the highest designation of origin for a single estate. The "vino de pago DO" is the highest classification under Spanish wine law and was introduced by Parliament in 2003. It applies to individual wineries whose vineyards have unique environmental and climatic characteristics that distinguish them from surrounding regions and designations of origin. All grapes used must come from the estate's own vineyards and be vinified on the estate. The wines must reflect the specific character of their respective origin. They may not carry any other quality designation or indication of origin.

Bodegas Vizar is located in the municipality of Villabáñez, east of Valladolid in the region of Castilla y León, bordering the DO Ribera del Duero. Dehesa Peñalba's vineyards are located in a river basin with a topsoil of pebbles, gravel and sand and a subsoil of marl limestone. "This means that the soils are dry and sandy on the surface. It is a warm but cool terrain with good water reserves, low in organic matter and nutrients," explains managing director and co-founder Felipe Zarzuela.

Bodegas Vizar has around 90 hectares of land on which Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Verdejo are grown. The wines are currently labelled as IGP Tierra de Castilla y León and will be allowed to bear the Dehesa Peñalba vino de pago DO from the 2022 vintage.
