Italian wine exports recorded significant losses in 2023, particularly in the five most important sales markets. This is according to the industry monitor published by the Italian winegrowers' association Unione Italiana Vini (UIV). The five countries USA, Germany, Canada, Japan and Great Britain account for 56 per cent of total exports. Together, they imported Italian wines worth 4.45 billion euros last year. While 4.4 per cent less wine was sold in the main markets, the value actually fell by 7.3 per cent. This confirms the difficult situation in which Italian wine producers currently find themselves.

Exported volumes declined in all major markets, with the exception of Germany. Imported volumes there increased by seven per cent, although this was only due to bulk wines (+16%). The US market in particular weakened in 2023 (-13%), as retailers imported less due to enormous inventories. According to the UIV, however, the three per cent drop in average prices is more worrying than the declining volume.

"It is undeniable that our country needs to expand its customer base. 2024 promises to be very complex and challenging," commented UIV President Lamberto Frescobaldi on the figures.
