The well-known VDP winery Juliusspital (****) in Würzburg (Franconia) will get a new director in 2023. Joachim Brand will succeed Horst Kolesch (pictured), who is retiring after almost 40 years at the winery. For 36 years, he was in charge of the traditional winery, which was founded in 1567. After a transition and handover phase in the summer, Brand is to take over responsibility in November.

With 180 hectares of farmland, the Juliusspital Foundation's winery is the second largest in Germany. The vineyards extend over the whole of Wein-Franken with a linear distance of 100 km. It calls itself the "largest Silvaner winery in the world". Horst Kolesch, who studied agriculture and oenology, came to the Juliusspital as a trainee and was appointed farm manager at the age of only 28. This not only gave him overall responsibility for the vineyards and winery, but also over 1,000 employees at harvest time.

His successor Joachim Brand was operations manager at the VDPFürst Hohenlohe-Oehringen *** winery in Württemberg for 15 years, which he expanded from 17 to 30 hectares and converted to organic farming. During this time, the cellar was also newly built. His position there has not yet been filled.
