A series of hailstorms has hit vineyards in France and Spain. In the Ribera del Duero region in Spain, up to 2,000 hectares were damaged, according to local media reports. That is almost ten percent of the vineyards in the region. The centre of the devastation is the town of Pesquera del Duero. Among others, the well-known Vega-Sicilia winery is also affected, where 32 hectares of vines for the wine "Alión" were damaged. The hailstones were up to 10 cm high.
In France, the storms raged mainly on the Loire around Vouvray, where 50 mm of rain and hail fell in just three minutes at around 9 pm on 3 June, tearing off leaves and even damaging the vines. This means that the region's winegrowers are again suffering severe damage after the frost in spring.
