According to current figures from the German Wine Institute (DWI), exports of German wines rose by 27 percent last year to 1.2 million hectolitres. At 357 million euros, the value of wines in 2021 reached an all-time high since 2010. Compared to 2020, the value is a whopping 29 percent higher than in the previous year. Especially in the USA, Germany's most important wine export market, the value of US wine exports rose by 24 percent to 65 million euros. The British market is also showing positive signs: there, the value even increased by 62 per cent to 23 million euros. China imported German wines worth 19 million euros (+15%), with an average price of 5.19 euros per litre, far above the average price of total exports of 2.95 euros per litre. Wine exports to Russia were 30,000 hectolitres and worth seven million euros. Russia is thus in 15th place among the most important export markets for German wines.

"However, these export increases must also be seen against the background of the partial relaxation of the Corona regulations in many export markets and the changed consumption behaviour due to the pandemic. In addition, stocks were replenished after the US punitive tariffs were abolished from March last year", DWI managing director Monika Reule explains the positive development.
