For the traditional wine auction of the VDP.Rheingau at Kloster Eberbach on 5 March, the wine bottles were made forgery-proof for the first time using blockchain technology. For this purpose, each of the almost 3,000 bottles was equipped with an NFC chip. These chips can transmit data contactlessly over a distance of a few centimetres via electromagnetic induction. They are dynamically encrypted and signal whether the bottle has been opened. Thus, it is currently impossible to counterfeit or reuse a bottle.

Each chip has a digital twin, the so-called Non-Fungible Token (NFT). The NFT is a cryptographically uniquely generated, indivisible identification token and represents each individual bottle in the blockchain. The owner can store this digitally. This creates an ownership history for each bottle. In addition, the NFC chips can also be used to transport further information about the respective wines. The chips fit all bottle and closure formats and are considered a certificate of authenticity.
