The German Wine Institute (DWI) has published the 2023/2024 statistics for German wine. It contains detailed figures for 2022: per capita consumption of wine in Germany fell by four per cent to 19.9 litres during this period, while sparkling wine consumption remained constant at 3.2 litres. The most important source of wine for Germans in 2022 was again the food retail trade (LEH), through which 64 per cent of all wines were sold, 37 per cent of which through discounters. 22 per cent of all wines were purchased directly from producers or in their online shops.

The tense economic environment was reflected in falling spending on wine in 2022: German wines were purchased at an average price of €4.18 per litre, which corresponds to an 8% drop in sales. In the case of foreign wines, volumes fell by seven per cent and expenditure by five per cent. Their average price was 3.64 euros per litre. The market share of German wines fell by one per cent to 44 per cent.

The average export price for German wines rose by 20 cents to a new high of 3.15 euros in 2022. This was twice as high as 20 years ago. The value of German wine exports also rose by four per cent to 370 million euros, although the volume fell by three per cent to 1.17 million hectolitres. The most important export markets in terms of value share are the USA (17.4%), Norway (9.1%), the Netherlands (8.2%), the UK (6.6%) and China (6.2%). 24 per cent more volume was delivered to China in 2022, with a 22 per cent increase in value. The 45,000 hectolitres had an average value of 5.12 euros per litre. Although volumes fell significantly in many export markets, revenues increased. Despite the invasion of Ukraine, the development in Russia is striking: with an increase of 89 per cent in volume and 87 per cent in value compared to 2021, Russia accounted for the same share of value as Switzerland in 2022 - namely 3.5 per cent.

The top five importing countries by value and volume were Italy, France, Spain, the USA and Austria. Most importing countries lost volume in Germany, but were able to increase value. The largest increases were recorded by Hungary, Georgia, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Croatia, Israel and Lebanon.

At 9.1 million hectolitres, the 2022 harvest was better than expected due to the dry summer. It is three per cent above the ten-year average.
