The Spanish DO Cava set new records for sales figures and turnover in 2023. Worldwide, 252 million bottles were sold, which is 2.7 million or 1.9 per cent more than in 2022. In Spain, sales of Cava increased by 3.9 per cent in volume and 10.6 per cent in value. It therefore accounted for almost 88 per cent of the volume and 79 per cent of sales in the domestic sparkling wine market.

The most important export country was Germany, with growth of over four per cent to 31.1 million bottles. The USA remained in second place with 21.6 million bottles - despite a decline in sales of 13.5 per cent. The third-best market was Belgium, where sales rose by 5.4 per cent to 22 million bottles. In the UK, 16.8 million bottles were sold, an increase of 5.4 per cent. In total, 70 per cent of Cava was sold abroad. This makes Cava the Spanish DO with the largest export volumes.

The growth of cavas from organic production is striking. Their sales grew by a quarter, while those of conventional cavas fell slightly. From 2025, the entire Cava de Guarda Superior category must be produced organically with an ageing period of 18 months. Rosé cava also grew by 3.3 per cent to 23.5 million bottles.
