The champagne house Louis Roederer is taking legal action against a small London winery for using the name "Crystal" for its rosé Pét Nat. The Renegade Urban Winery has been offering the "Crystal Pet Nat Pink" from Croatina grapes, named after customer and fashion expert Crystal Lai, for 28 pounds (about 32 euros) since 2018. Louis Roederer has now objected to the name as it infringes the trademark rights of its prestige cuvée Roederer Cristal, which costs around 300 euros, and is demanding that production and sales be stopped immediately.

The head of the winery, Warwick Smith, calls the demand "bizarre, given the quantities involved. We are tiny. As far as Cristal is concerned, I think they sell 300,000 - 400,000 bottles a year, and our maximum production capacity for our whole range is about 70,000 bottles. The wine colours are different. Ours is not champagne, theirs is. The grapes are different, the labels are different. The spelling and pronunciation are different."

A spokesman for Louis Roederer told drinksbusiness.com, a trade magazine, that they could not comment on the matter while it was with the legal department.
