Prices for conventionally produced red AOC cask wines from Bordeaux have fallen by ten percent to 1.04 euros per litre. The volume has also fallen by the same amount to 682,000 hectolitres. The figures were published by the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) in its 2022/23 annual report. Although the price is significantly higher than the 0.75 euros per litre that winegrowers receive for crisis distillation, it is well below the 1.67 euros per litre paid in 2017/18.

The current retail price for organic cask wines is €1.98 per litre. In 2018/19, 2.38 euros were still paid. The volume traded fell by 36 per cent compared to 2021 to 16,000 hectolitres. Production costs have "exploded", especially in 2023, according to Arthur Gaubet, viticulture consultant at the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture. The fight against peronospora and other pathogens in the vineyards has caused significant additional costs. According to Gaubet, the cost of fuel has risen by 60 percent, fungicides by 16 percent, fertilisers by seven percent and organic fertilisers by eleven percent. Added to this are the increases in minimum wages for workers and the 20 per cent rise in prices for bottles and packaging. The current revenues are therefore not sufficient to cover the increased production costs.
