Paitin

The Pasquero-Elia family's Barbaresco winery Paitin has acquired a majority stake in the historic Cantina Bianchi in Sizzano in northern Piedmont. The winery comprises around nine hectares, five in Sizzano and two hectares each in the Gattinara and Ghemme appellations.

With this investment, Paitin aims to diversify its portfolio and add another facet to its Nebbiolo wines. Luca Pasquero-Elia, who runs the Paitin winery together with his father Giovanni and his uncle Silvano, emphasised the importance of terroir in viticulture. "Great terroirs are not just made up of experienced winemakers and excellent grapes," he said. "Soil, climate and history are crucial. Alto Piemonte brings all the necessary aspects to the table."

Paitin's new "Monte" line from Alto Piemonte comprises three wines so far: the Monte Bianco Colline Novaresi (100% Erbaluce), the Monte Rosa Rosato Costa della Sesia (100% Nebbiolo) and the Monte Rosso Colline Novaresi (a cuvée of 95% Nebbiolo and 5% Vespolina). The white and rosé wines will be available soon, while the single-vineyard Nebbiolo from Gattinara and Ghemme will go on sale at a later date.

Paitin is not the first winery from the Langhe to see potential in Alto Piemonte. In 2018, Roberto Conterno bought the traditional Nervi winery in Gattinara from Giacomo Conterno.
