Statistics Austria's wine export figures show a new record: according to the data, wine exports in 2020 rose by 6.3 per cent to 67.4 million litres. The value increased by 2.4 per cent to 187.3 million euros. At the end of 2020, Österreich Wein Marketing GmbH (ÖWM) had assumed a slightly negative export total of only around 62 million litres at the equivalent value of 175 million euros. This forecast was based on the export figures up to September and the continuing tense situation worldwide. In the last quarter, however, exports increased strongly.

Germany, Austria's most important export market, grew strongly, especially in volume, by 10.2 per cent. Turnover grew by only 1.7 per cent in comparison. Second-placed Switzerland (incl. Liechtenstein) even increased the volume by 20.1 per cent and the value by 5.2 per cent. Austria thus achieved very high figures for the Swiss in an international comparison: according to Swiss Impex figures, imports from all other wine countries rose by only 2.1 per cent in terms of sales volume and 0.4 per cent in terms of turnover.

The significant increase in export volume compared to the value indicates that due to the pandemic restrictions, less Austrian wine was sold in the international gastronomy, but more via online and offline trade channels such as food retail and specialised wine trade. According to Statistik Austria, this also resulted in a slightly lower average price of 2.78 euros per litre (2019: 2.89 euros).
