The earliest grape harvest in almost five decades has begun in Austria. On 5 August, the first grapes of the Bouvier variety were brought in at 15.5° KMW (75° Oe) in the Burgenland municipalities of Illmitz, Podersdorf, Pamhagen and Apetlon. On average, the grape harvest in the Neusiedlersee wine-growing region does not begin until mid-August.

The trade magazine "Der Winzer" quotes Sensal Franz Zehetner, who can only remember an earlier start to the grape harvest in the early 1970s. He expects the harvest to be slightly below average, but the quality of the grapes is impeccable. The winegrowers currently receive 60 cents per kilogramme of grapes.
