Aluminium cans instead of glass bottles can reduce CO2 emissions from bottling wine by 79 per cent per litre. With this approach, the new wine brand Djuce aims to reduce the wine industry's CO2 emissions of 43.5 million tonnes annually by offering premium wines from across Europe in cans. These have been selected with a team of top European sommeliers including Emmanuel Rosier from the three-star Pavillon Ledoyen restaurant in Paris.
Philip Marthinsen, co-founder of Djucewines, says: "Biodynamic viticulture accounts for less than half of the climate impact of wine. For the other half, packaging and distribution, there is still an old prejudice where most of us see glass as something natural and sustainable, while aluminium is evil and harmful to the environment. But if you look at emissions, recycling aluminium cans is actually twenty-eight times more efficient and at the same time they are twenty times lighter than traditional glass bottles and therefore twice as efficient in transport - and they don't break as easily. Bottles are the past, cans are definitely the future. Plus, the 250 millilitre cans allow you to mix and match different wines for dinner or just enjoy a good glass during the week."
Twelve wines are planned for the summer, four of which have been available since May. These come from the wineries Famille Chaudiére in Provence, Dominique Piron in Beaujolais, Meinklang in Burgenland and Mehling in Deidesheim in the Palatinate. All wines are vegan, sustainably grown and low in sulphur.

According to forecasts, the global market for canned wine will grow by 13.2 per cent annually and account for ten per cent of the total US wine market by 2025.
