The winemaker Andrea Franchetti has died in Rome at the age of 72 after a long illness. The Italian-American left his mark on the international wine world with the wines from his wineries Tenuta di Trinoro in Val d'Orcia in southern Tuscany and Passopisciaro**** on Mount Etna. Franchetti began his winemaking career in 1991 after working as a restaurateur and wine merchant in Rome and New York. He bought an estate south-east of Montepulciano and planted the classic Bordeaux varieties there. In 1997, his first wine went on sale and quickly gained cult status. In 2000, he was one of the first to invest in vineyards on Mount Etna. Since the founding of Passopisciaro, Franchetti has been one of the most influential producers on the volcano and has noticeably shaped the fate of the appellation.
