According to a recent study by the market research institute Wine Intelligence, 39 percent of regular wine drinkers actively limit their consumption. This is especially true for the age group of 18 to 34 years. The results confirm the worldwide trend towards reduced alcohol consumption. Lulie Halstead, CEO of Wine Intelligence, explained that this could mean drinking less alcohol on certain occasions, reducing the alcohol content of drinks or choosing not to drink alcohol at all on certain occasions. New data collected in the past two months showed that some consumers were switching between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, or making their own mixed drink to reduce alcohol content, Halstead added.

In the US, 30 per cent of regular wine drinkers said they would prefer to buy a bottle of champagne that had a lower alcohol content. So it is more a matter of reduction than abstinence. In the long term, the share of wine drinkers has dropped significantly in the past ten years in the most important markets. A decade ago, the proportion of adults aged 18-34 who regularly drank wine in the UK was around 50 per cent. Looking at the figure for the same age group at the end of 2020, it would be only 24 per cent.
