The communication agency Sopexa has published the international wine trends 2021. According to its "Wine Trade Monitors" study, the most popular wines among international professionals continue to come from France (90% of listings), Italy (82%) and Spain (76%). Close behind are wines from Portugal, the USA and Austria. Overall, the wine offer is becoming more diverse. According to Sopexa, Japan, with its wine listings from eleven countries, is still ahead of Belgium (6.4 countries) and China (5.2).

What is positive above all is that the wine world has found its optimism again. German, Canadian and Dutch professionals were particularly confident about the future. Only their British colleagues were rather cautious about growth due to the Brexit.

For 2022, the experts predict several trends. 45 percent of the respondents see organic wine as the most dynamic category, ahead of regional wine (22%). Another trend is rosé wines, which will increase according to 19 percent of the participants. The fourth place is shared by two categories: Canada and Japan consider orange wines and pet-nat to be particularly important, while wine experts from the USA see growth in flavoured wines.

In Germany, retailers expect a strong increase in sales of Spanish wines. Nevertheless, German wines remain the professionals' favourite, said 70% of the respondents. This applies above all to white and sparkling wines, they said. Regional white wines from Rheinhessen, Pfalz and Baden are more popular than their French competitors. In the sparkling wine category, sparkling wine also plays a more important role than champagne, prosecco, cava and crémant. The grape variety most attractive to German wine professionals is Pinot Gris. German wine merchants expect increased demand for it (45%), followed equally by Riesling and Primitivo (29%), followed by Sauvignon Blanc (27%). When it comes to organic image, German wines are in the lead among them: 53% of German specialists see German wines in first place, followed by France (22%) and Spain (8%).

For the study, the most important local wine trade players took part in an online survey. The focus this year was on market development, trends and their impact on sales in the coming years. The results provide information on the eight major wine sales markets Belgium, China, Germany, Japan, United Kingdom, USA, Canada and the Netherlands.
