According to the Spanish daily El Pais, the well-known Spanish winery Vega Sicilia has bought seven hectares of vineyards in Rias Baixas and plans to build its own winery there. It would be Vega Sicilia's sixth winery. According to the report, Pablo Alvarez, the director of the Tempos Vega Sicilia group, which includes wineries in the Ribera del Duero, Rioja, Toro and Tokaj regions of Hungary, has purchased land near the town of Crecente in the Condado de Tea subzone. Granite and slate soils predominate in the mountainous appellation.

In the Rias Baixas region in Galicia in the northwest of Spain, 95 per cent of the white grape variety Albariño is cultivated. The wines have been in high demand in recent years, especially from abroad. Pablo Alvarez had announced the project several months ago, an official confirmation by Vega Sicilia is still pending.
