French wine-growing areas are shifting further and further north. According to figures of the National Institute for Agricultural Products (AgriMer) on the development of vineyards between 2008 and 2018, the vineyard areas in the south of the country have decreased by up to 18 percent.

The area under vines in the Midi-Pyrenees region decreased by 18.2 per cent and in the Pays de Loire by 15.9 per cent. In Languedoc-Roussilion, Corsica, Provence and the Cote d'Azur, there are also significantly fewer vineyards than in 2010. The area under vines in Bordelais has shrunk by seven percent in these ten years.

In the north, on the other hand, the area under cultivation grew, especially in the high-yield regions. The area under vines in Burgundy, for example, increased by five percent and in Champagne by 9.5 percent. Further increases are expected there in the coming years. Alsace increased by 2.6 percent.
