South African premium wines experienced a boom in exports in 2020. According to figures from marketing organisation Wines of South Africa, the "super-premium" segment increased by 37 percent in volume sold, while exports as a whole remained stable with a reduction of 0.2 percent compared to 2019. The value of wine sold, on the other hand, was 7.7 per cent higher than in the previous year.
South African sales growth was particularly strong in the UK at 28 per cent, the Netherlands at 19 per cent, Sweden at 17 per cent and the US at 12 per cent. In contrast to the premium segment, the volume sold of very low-priced wines fell quite sharply.
