The British auction house Sotheby's achieved a new turnover record with wine and spirits last year. According to Sotheby's Wine & Spirits Market Report 2021, the 53 auctions of the house achieved a record result of 132 million US dollar. This represents a 44 per cent increase over 2020, which was impacted by Covid restrictions, and a 12 per cent increase over 2019.

According to the company, 19 private owner auctions generated total proceeds of US$75 million, representing 57 per cent of total sales. According to Sotheby's, 2021 is the fourth consecutive year in which sales by individual owners accounted for the largest share of Sotheby's revenue. In 2021, auctions of Château Mouton Rothschild, Châteaux Rauzan-Ségla and Canon as well as Ornellaia and Seña took place.

At the same time, the auction house is recording a continuous decline in Bordeaux sales in 2021. While in 2016, Bordeaux still accounted for about 62 percent of the auction sales at Sotheby's, its share dropped to only 22 percent last year. Thus, sales were far behind the share of Burgundies, which was 46 per cent. In 2016, it was still 26 per cent.

In the list of Sotheby's top 10 wine estates, Burgundy is meanwhile dominating, too: Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), Hospices de Beaune, Henri Jayer and Leroy/d'Auvenay occupy the first to fourth places. Wines from Bordeaux occupied only four places in the top 10 producers. Château Petrus took fifth place, ahead of Château Haut-Brion (sixth), Château Mouton Rothschild (eighth) and Château Lafite (ninth).
