The winegrowers in the Var region near the Côte d'Azur suffered severe damage from the forest fires last week. These are now being assessed, with an estimated 73 wineries affected and several completely destroyed. The forest fires in the Rosé region of southern France are another problem for a harvest that has already been described as one of the worst in France's history. Heavy frosts in the spring have affected the vines, and heavy rains in the summer have given growers problems with mildew. The French Ministry of Agriculture said earlier this month that this year's yield will be "historically low". It said production is expected to fall to one of the lowest levels in history.
