De-alcoholised wine should also be allowed to carry the organic label in the future. However, EU Organic Regulation 2018/848 must be amended for this to happen. Organic wines currently lose their status as "organic wine" due to dealcoholisation. Germany, with the support of other EU member states, has therefore submitted a corresponding application in which the authorisation of vacuum distillation as a dealcoholisation process for organic wine is to be approved.

The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, has spoken out in favour of the change. "For me, a good glass of wine is also a part of quality of life. More and more people want to enjoy wine without alcohol from time to time and that is certainly not bad news. Anyone who wants to drink alcohol-free wine should also be able to do so in organic quality. However, dealcoholisation is not yet permitted in the organic regulation - you can't really explain that to anyone! We should change this quickly. I am therefore campaigning in Brussels and with colleagues in the member states for a modern and targeted amendment to the organic regulation. This step opens the door to an additional growing market, is in the interests of German viticulture and thus strengthens it in the long term," said Mr Özdemir ahead of his visit to the Eurovino wine fair in Karlsruhe.
