The recently launched EU research project "Stella" aims to improve the monitoring of plant health and the early detection of pests. The precise monitoring system called "Stella Pest Surveillance System" (PSS) will use modern sensor technology and artificial intelligence to recognise pests and develop a strategy for farmers to reduce the use of pesticides.

The French Institute of Vine and Wine (IFV) in Colmar will be responsible for research into vine diseases. The main focus here is on black wood and leaf roll disease. The aim of the system is to warn winegrowers at the first symptoms so that they can be contained more quickly and efficiently.

The first year is planned for the definition of detection protocols. "We will set up networked insect traps, install cameras, analyse satellite images and fly drones over several plots in Alsace," explains scientist Séverine Coubard from the IFV. "We will work on vineyards and mother vines, varying the grape varieties and soil types. Winegrowers can contribute to the project by reporting any symptoms or vectors of bio-pests they encounter in an app," Coubard continued.

From 2025, the collected data will be analysed by models based on artificial intelligence. "AI can alert users at the first sign of an infestation and could therefore be a promising solution to better manage these two diseases," explained Séverine Coubard. At present, there is only a limited chance of containing the two diseases. The research should be completed and the system ready for use in four years. A total of 14 partner organisations from seven countries are involved in the project, which is funded by the European Union's "Horizon Europe" programme with almost 5 million euros.
