German sparkling wine producers sold around 245 million 0.75-litre bottles of sparkling wine in Germany in 2023. According to figures from the Association of German Sparkling Wine Cellars (VDS), this corresponds to a decline of around 1.5 per cent compared to the previous year. In 2022, sales had grown by 2.3 per cent compared to 2021.
In contrast, demand for non-alcoholic sparkling wines has risen significantly: in 2023, Germans bought around 18 million bottles. According to the VDS figures, this represents an increase in sales of 9.7% compared to 2022. This results in a market share of 7.4% for the first time.
The Verband Deutscher Sektkellereien e.V. (VDS) represents around 95% of sparkling wine production in Germany. Its members include sparkling wine groups such as Rotkäppchen-Mumm and Schloss Wachenheim as well as co-operatives and the Association of Traditional Sparkling Wine Makers.
