Gérard Bertrand **, winegrower in Languedoc and one of the world's leading experts in biodynamic viticulture, carried the Olympic flame through the city of Narbonne on 16 May. Bertrand, a former professional rugby player (pictured with local politicians), owns 17 vineyards in Languedoc and one in Cahors. All are cultivated biodynamically. He exports his wines to more than 180 countries.
Commenting on his torch relay, he said: "I am very proud to carry the Olympic flame, firstly because it is my territory, but above all because it symbolises self-transcendence and the peace we need in the world." The Olympic Committee selected 11,000 people to carry the flame from Marseille to Paris, where the 33rd Olympic Games will take place in July.
