The London-based market research institute International Wine and Spirit Record (IWSR), which specialises in the drinks industry, predicts a slow decline in sales for wine community in the long term. The economic uncertainty in many countries is leading to cutbacks, particularly in the catering sector. The volume of wine sold worldwide fell by five per cent in the first half of 2022 compared to 2021. In the world's 20 most important wine markets, the number of adults classified as regular wine drinkers is also continuing to fall - with the exception of Brazil. Only there was more wine drunk in 2021 than in 2017.

Only sparkling wines and premium wines recorded growth, which is reflected in increased sales. While the volume of the market for still wines fell by two per cent in 2021, the retail value rose by five per cent. Sparkling wines, on the other hand, increased by nine per cent in volume and even 20 per cent in value. The trend towards sparkling wines continued in the first half of 2022 with an increase of three per cent in volume.
