The Spanish winery group Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) is entering the Rías Baixas growing region with the purchase of the renowned Albariño producer Bodegas La Val. According to a press release by CVNE, the winery has a total of 90 ha of vineyards and produces wines exclusively from its own grapes.
Bodegas La Val is located in Salvaterra de Miño, which is in the Condado do Tea sub-region of the DO. The vineyards are located on the banks of the river Miño. They include the 35 ha Arantei vineyard, the 13 ha Taboexa vineyard and the five ha Porto.
La Val was founded in 1985 and three years later was the driving force behind the creation of the DO Rías Baixas. La Val has become known with the worldwide marketing of the local grape variety Albariño and also grows the native grape varieties Loureiro and Treixadura. The export share is 70 per cent.
CVNE board chairman Víctor Urrutia said the purchase strengthened the group's prospects of becoming "Spain's most important winery". The company, founded in 1879, includes the Bodegas Imperial, Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino in Rioja, Roger Goulart in Penedés, Bela in Ribera del Duero and Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras. The purchase price for the takeover of La Val was not disclosed.
