Representatives of the international wine industry have founded the Sustainable Wine Roundtable (SWR) to jointly create a global standard for sustainability. These include major wine brands, small wineries, distributors and research and environmental organisations.
The aim is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices in the fight against climate catastrophe. The organisation builds on regional sustainability certifications and aims to develop consensus on how to measure and implement practices. SWR's work will thus provide clear guidance on how to put vineyards and wineries on the path to sustainability, and help retailers and consumers understand and use eco-labels and green claims. "There are many innovative programmes and projects that are making vineyards and wineries more environmentally friendly and socially just. Our goal is to bring them together to provide the clarity, cohesion and collaboration the wine sector needs to establish itself as a leader on the world stage of sustainability," said Richard Bampfield MW, the Roundtable's first chair. Among the 49 founding members are two representatives from Germany, the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences and the Dr Loosen Winery.
