The harvest in the five departments of the AOC Champagne began on 29 August 2017.

This is one month earlier than last year, making it one of the five earliest readings in the history of Champagne. The dates are set each year by the Champagne winegrowers and houses for each of the 320 communes and for the three main grape varieties. They are binding for all wine growers. In the commune of Montgeux, the grapes have been harvested since 26 August. The last date for the start of the harvest this season has been set for the commune of Germaine on 12 September 2017.

In addition, the Champagne winegrowers and houses under the umbrella of the Comité Champagne limited the maximum permitted yield to 10,800 kilograms per hectare.

Winegrowers who, due to failures, do not reach the yield of 10,300 kilograms per hectare (previous year: 9,700 kilograms per hectare) may compensate their yield deficit with a maximum of 500 kilograms per hectare by accessing the reserve of wines from previous harvests.

In Champagne, the grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. More than 100,000 seasonal workers help in the vineyards to harvest, transport and press the grapes.
