Punitive tariffs in the USA and the global Corona pandemic caused significant declines in exports of German wines in many foreign markets last year.

According to the German Wine Institute (DWI), the volume of wine exported and its value each fell by nine per cent to 953,000 hectolitres and 277 million euros compared to 2019. However, the DWI reports that there were very large differences within the individual export markets, with winners and losers.

For example, German wine producers in their most important export market, the USA, had to cope with a loss in value of 19 per cent or twelve million euros last year due to the punitive tariffs. This alone corresponds to 42 percent of the worldwide decline in sales of German wines. At six per cent (9,000 hectolitres), the drop in the volume of wine exported to the United States was "comparatively moderate". This is due to the fact that the market participants on both sides of the Atlantic have absorbed part of the 25 percent increase in price through punitive tariffs.

Presumably, the Corona restrictions explain the negative signs in export revenues with German wines in important foreign markets such as the Netherlands (minus five per cent), China (minus three per cent) or Canada (minus nine per cent).

Wine exports to the Scandinavian countries, on the other hand, had developed very positively. At the top is Norway, which consolidated its second place in the ranking of German wine export markets with an increase of 26 per cent in export value and 40 per cent in sales. Sweden remains in sixth place after an increase of three per cent in export value and Finland has moved up to eighth place with an increase of 14 per cent. In Denmark, German wines experienced a particularly large increase in value of 30 per cent.
