According to the current wine consumption balance, the per capita consumption of wine in Germany has remained stable compared to the same period last year. Thus, consumption in the wine year 2020/2021 was 20.7 litres per person. The study prepared by the German Winegrowers' Association shows an unchanged consumption of 17.2 million hectolitres of domestic and foreign wines. The volume of sparkling wine also remained constant in the past wine year at 2.7 million hectolitres. This corresponds to a sparkling wine consumption of 3.2 litres per person and year. If still and sparkling wine consumption are combined, the total volume is 19.9 million hectolitres, the equivalent of 23.9 litres of wine and sparkling wine per capita and year. With this quantity, Germany ranks fourth among the world's largest wine consumer markets. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), most wine is consumed in the USA (33 million hl), followed by France (24.7 million hl) and Italy (24.5 million hl).

"The unchanged balance of wine consumption from the past marketing year shows that although consumers have partly shifted their wine consumption home due to the Corona-related restrictions in gastronomy, overall no more wine was drunk during the pandemic", DWI managing director Monika Reule comments on the figures.
