The restaurant guide Gault & Millau has published Germany's best restaurants for the fortieth time and, with Douce Steiner, has awarded a "Chef of the Year" for the first time. The top chef has stood for top quality at the "Hirschen" restaurant in Sulzburg in the Markgräflerland region for 15 years. But not only this category was won by a woman, all other awards went to women this year. The title "Best Sommelière" was awarded to Alexandra Himmel from the Lafleur restaurant in Frankfurt.
Also for the first time, the best wine lists in Germany were awarded the "Grand Selection Award - Winelist" in seven categories by the Gault & Millau experts. The jury placed particular emphasis on creativity and diversity in the selection of wines. They judged the balance in terms of origin and quality, the price-performance ratio and the overall presentation of the wine list. Restaurants with excellent wine lists, according to Gault & Millau, are Bar Brass, Dae Mon, Enoiteca Il Calice and Ottorink Weinbar, all in Berlin.

Editor-in-chief Dr Christoph Wirtz said after the publication: "For decades, top cuisine was an environment that tolerated women more than it encouraged them. That has changed in the meantime. Too slowly and not everywhere for a long time, but clearly and above all: once and for all. The opening up and liberalisation of society, the struggle for equal rights and participation now benefit all epicureans - the gastronomic landscape in Germany has never been more colourful, more diverse, more exciting."
