According to initial calculations by the Federal Statistical Office, the German catering and hotel industry recorded around 38 per cent less turnover in price-adjusted terms last year than in 2019, based on figures from January to November 2020 and an estimate of the lockdown month of December.

According to the figures, their turnover in November 2020 had slumped by 52 per cent in price-adjusted terms compared to October. This figure was even 67.4 per cent lower than February 2020, the last month of normal business before the first lockdown, they said. Compared to November 2019, the losses would be 67.9 per cent in price-adjusted terms.

In this context, business with accommodation of all kinds had fallen by 82.8 per cent in November 2020 compared to 2019, while restaurant sales had dropped by 60.1 per cent.
