In Italy, the Corona pandemic has led to a slump in wine consumption with the closure of restaurants. Now the government has decided on a further lockdown due to rapidly rising infection figures in many regions. This means that bars and restaurants are no longer allowed to open. The Coldiretti farmers' association is therefore calling for state aid and emergency distillation. Compared to last year, about 150 million litres more wine are already stored in the wine cellars as restaurants, hotels, bars and wine shops all over Europe were closed and are now again, Coldiretti announced. He said exports of Italian wines in 2020 were down 2.2 per cent compared to 2019. This corresponds to a value of about 6.3 billion euro. Therefore, the association is asking the government for quick aid packages worth 150 million euro as well as for an emergency distillation. This would make it possible to produce about 25,000 litres of disinfectant in the country, most of which currently has to be bought abroad.
