To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the US wine company Mondavi has launched a wine collection with thermochromic labels under its "Mondavi and Family" brand. The temperature-sensitive colour changes when the bottles get colder. As soon as they have cooled down to about twelve degrees Celsius, the cream-coloured labels turn into strong hues: the Chardonnay becomes orange, the Sauvignon Blanc, the Pinot Grigio shows itself in shades of green and the Moscato becomes blue-green. In addition, a new design appears in the background.
Treasury Wine Estates was the first producer to use temperature-sensitive colour for Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé from the New Zealand brand Matua back in 2016. On the label, a snowflake and the tribal symbol Ta Moko changed colour. In 2017, G3 Enterprises launched a specially developed colour system for wine capsules and labels. In addition to thermochromic ink, G3 introduced photochromic ink - which is activated by sunlight - and bichromic ink, which changes colour when viewed from different angles. With the temperature-sensitive ink, the temperature at which the colours change can be determined by the client. According to the manufacturer, the costs are only slightly higher than for normal labels.
