The Vinexpo in Bordeaux, one of the largest and most important wine fairs in the world, dedicated a day of the fair to a grape variety for the first time in its history. Those responsible chose Riesling for this purpose. The fair's managing director Guillaume Deglise often had to justify this choice in advance. His reason for this decision: he loves Riesling and it gives him pleasure to focus on it in Bordeaux, of all places, reports the German Wine Institute (DWI).

In addition, it brings together wine-growing countries such as Germany, France, Australia and the USA. The DWI had supported the initiative with a lot of energy. More than half of all Riesling vines in the world grow in the 13 German wine-growing regions, and Germany exports Riesling wines to more than 140 countries.

The French fair organisers particularly liked the concept of "Generation Riesling". They organised a Riesling picnic on the shore of the lake next to the gigantic exhibition hall. In addition, Romana Echensperger MW moderated many Riesling tastings for the trade visitors at the joint stand of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), and she also led a completely booked master class for 110 trade visitors.

Vinexpo itself invited six internationally renowned sommeliers, including Markus del Monego MW and Debra Meiburg MW, to speak at an international Riesling Masterclass - again in front of a full house. The "Riesling Day" ended with a big party in the old town of Bordeaux, where the DWI presented more Generation Riesling wines.

On the other three days of the fair, the focus at the DWI tasting counter was also on other German grape varieties. There were tastings on topics such as "Good-Better-Silvaner", "License to Sparkle", "Organic", "You call it Pinot Noir - We call it Spätburgunder".
