The German winegrowers' association Ecovin adopted a new guideline at its members' meeting at the Klopfer winery in Württemberg. Around 40 members voted in favour of stricter rules to sharpen the commitment to organic viticulture. For example, species-rich cover crop is now compulsory, compost from the organic waste bin is banned due to problematic ingredients, and member farms are no longer allowed to have conventional branches of their operations.

"The new EU organic regulation from last year already made it necessary to adapt the directive. We have also made former target regulations more binding," said Ecovin's national chair Andreas Hattemer after the meeting.

The general meeting also decided to add three more assessors to the board in order to push ahead with the generational change at the top of the association. In addition to Andreas Hattemer (CEO), Georg Forster (CFO), Hanneke Schönhals (Board Spokesperson), Reinhard Schäfer, Simon Ollinger and Paulin Köpfer (all assessors), Max Jäck, Martin Philipps and Philipp Rieger are now members of the board.

Ecovin currently comprises 235 member farms, which together cultivate almost a quarter of Germany's organic vineyards.
