The Chianti consortium has reduced yields per hectare by ten percent for the coming harvest. The decision was made at the consortium's general assembly in Florence after the pressure on producers increased further. Warehouses are full and sales are declining. It had become necessary to cut production in order not to increase stocks any further, said Giovanni Busi, president of the Chianti consortium.
In 2022, sales had fallen by 14 per cent compared to the previous year, he said. Prices had risen by four to six per cent on average, but production costs had grown proportionately many times over, he said. "All this poses great difficulties for our farms. In practice, we have not had a normal year since 2017. The alarm bells have been ringing for the entire appellation for some time now," explains Giovanni Busi.
