Sales of Burgundy wines are down for the first time in several years. Supermarkets in France are particularly affected, where volumes fell by 25 percent and sales by 17 percent in the first eight months of the marketing year. This was announced by the vice-president of the BIVB association, Laurent Delauney. This development is striking because Burgundy has so far "resisted the national trend of declining consumption. We were the region that sold both the most wine and the most expensive". Gastronomy, on the other hand, saw a 53 per cent increase over the same period.

In exports, after three record years, the volume fell by 11 per cent, but the value rose by 13 per cent. The reason for the lower sales figures is the almost one-third smaller harvest of the 2021 vintage. At the same time, the demand has jumped and "the companies have sold as many older vintages as possible from their stocks in order not to disappoint the customers", Delauney continues.

The 2022 vintage is very promising for this, according to the BIVB, and is estimated to be very good in terms of both quantity and quality.
