The event "Barolo en primeur" will celebrate its premiere and will take place on 30 October 2021 at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour in Piedmont. The charitable project is organised by the two foundations Fondazione CRC and Fondazione CRC Donare as well as the Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani and will be live-streamed. The aim is to auction 15 barriques of the 2020 vintage, each containing around 300 bottles of Barolo, which will be put on the market in 2024 after the ageing period prescribed for Barolo. Donato Lanati is the oenologist responsible for the project: "Each barrique has unique characteristics because the vineyard of Cascina Gustava in Grinzane, where the grapes come from, has been divided into individual plots."

Auction house Christie's will open bidding for the barrels at US$30,000. Each bottle will be marked with a number and a special label designed by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone. Proceeds from the bottles will go to charitable organisations and projects.

"This is a truly historic event for Barolo. It is also a beacon project for the entire Italian wine sector, which has always been committed to promoting excellence, but for the first time in this exclusive and prestigious way," said Matteo Ascheri, president of the Barolo Consortium.
