The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) has published current figures on the development of organically certified viticulture. This has increased by around 13 percent per year in the period from 2005 to 2019. The area under organic viticulture worldwide is around 450,000 hectares, which corresponds to 6.2 percent of the total area. European countries dominate the ranking of countries with the largest share of certified vineyards: Italy with 15 percent, France and Austria with 14 percent. Germany is on par with Mexico with eight percent (equivalent to 8,300 hectares). Spain, France and Italy together account for 75 percent of the organically cultivated vineyards in the world.
In terms of annual growth rates, other countries are in the lead: Egypt (table grapes) with 36 percent, South Africa with 30 percent and Switzerland with 15 percent.
